A Mixed Feeling

In continuation from the previous post, I came up with an idea. It involved piecing together scraps of fabric and using free-motion zigzag stitching to create line embroidery. Scrunchies! They’re relatively simple to make and something I hadn’t attempted before. It was an experiment.

Initially, I tried adhering the scraps together with interfacing and then did embroidery to cover the messy seams. The first attempt failed:
➀ Since the scraps were only adhered but not sewn together, a narrow embroidery width setting easily led to tearing.
➁ The scraps used were too fragile for embroidery.
➂ Insufficient length of fabric, making the scrunchies tight and uncomfortable to wear.

For the second attempt, I stitched the seams open before embroidering them, resulting in a much better outcome but taking longer time. I also used two colours for a nicer appearance. I really like how they look. However, the process wasn’t pleasant. 😩 Repeatedly pressing the machine’s pedal, changing threads, and adjusting the embroidery hoop can be dull and boring.

When factoring in the time and effort invested in creating the piece, it becomes relatively expensive. Would anyone be willing to spend too much on a scrunchy? The creator naturally understands the process, but what about the buyer? Will the piece ultimately only resonate with the creator, leaving others indifferent?
